Mulch your grass Chicagoland! Don't Miss Out on This Opportunity to Return Nutrients to Your Lawn - for FREE!

A crucial quality in soil is the size of the particles. Bigger particles pack less closely, leaving more space for water and air to flow. Sandy soil, with big particles, is most porous and drains almost too well, letting water escape before being absorbed by roots.
At the other extreme, clay soil, the bane of many Chicago-area homeowners, has tiny particles that fit together tightly, trapping water and shutting out oxygen.
We need to be somewhere in the middle.
The magic ingredient is organic matter — basically, anything that was once a plant. Ideally, it will be composted to the point where it is relatively fine and loaded with beneficial microorganisms that work with plants' roots to provide nutrients and fight diseases.
The particles hold water that can be made available to plants, but there's space between them for air and drainage.
LawnLogIQ recommends adding compost or other organic matter, such as your grass clippings (MULCHED - NOT SIDE DISCHARGED!), mulching leaves in fall rather than bagging them, and, if a soil test shows, adding a soil amendment with compost, carbon, and bacteria to help break down the mulched clippings.
We advise against most of the big box store "organic" fertilizers as they are loaded with PFA's and many are human waste (yes, really!) rather than animal manure.
So, mulch your grass, Chicagoland! Cut often, cut a little shorter than you think you should, especially in the cooler months, and watch your lawn spread and grow like never before!
To a healthy lawn!
